15 writing prompts for when you’re stuck (self-help authors)

Stuck staring at a blank page? It happens to most writers but a lot of the time there’s a way to get unstuck. I’ll be sharing some writing prompts for healing yourself back into writing, because when life gets hard so does getting words on the page. They say failing to plan is planning to fail and while all writing is learning it’s good to have a plan for what to write when you get stuck.

Overcoming writer’s block with prompts is a game changer because most people think the way you overcome getting stuck is by sitting and thinking of something “good to say”. Sitting and thinking for too long can waste your precious writing time especially if you’re a busy mom, such as myself. I published my first book after having my 9th baby.

I was only able to become an author by overcoming getting stuck in my own  head and feelings. I had to work my way out of negative self-talk by writing imperfectly. Just tell yourself you will make it better later and write like you’re the only one who will read it.

Pick one, set a 10 minute timer and write without stopping.

  1. What I’m avoiding writing about is…
  1. The truth I don’t want to admit is…
  1. Right now I feel…
  1. If no one would judge me, I’d write about…
  1. The hardest part of my story is…
  1. What triggered me today was…
  1. I’m stuck because I’m scared of…
  1. The chapter that makes me cry is…
  1. What I wish someone had told me during [your pain] is…
  1. If I could help one person, I’d tell them…
  1. I started writing this book because…

12. The moment everything changed for me was…

  1. What I’m learning about myself right now is…
  1. I don’t know how to write about… (then just ramble)
  2. What are you grateful for right now…

The key is to write messy and keep going. If you try to make it perfect you may get back stuck! Always separate writing from editing, don’t do both at the same time. The prompts are to overcome writer’s block to get words flowing but avoid getting knocked off track by perfecting every word.

Don’t worry about whether this information fits into your book or not, these writing prompts are to help you get words flowing and once they come your mind will automatically lean towards your original writing topic. The topic of your self-help book. But first we have to get unstuck!

Figuring out what to write when you get stuck is beyond frustrating  and could arguably be the hardest part of writing.
